2-Hydroxy-3,5-dimethylbenzoic acid (2HDMB) is a hydrolysed carboxylic acid that belongs to the group of hydroxy acids. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and is used in cosmetics as an antioxidant. 2HDMB has been shown to cause bacterial regression by inhibiting the synthesis of long chains of carbohydrates, such as curdlan, pullulan, maltotriose and linear oligosaccharides. 2HDMB also inhibits the activity of alpha-amylase and α-glucosidase, which are enzymes that break down starch into glucose.
