N-(2-Carboxyethyl)iminodiacetic acid (CEDA) is a ligand that has been synthesised to bind metal ions and chelate them. It has been used as a model ligand for the study of metal ion binding and coordination chemistry. CEDA has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to the enzyme hydrogen peroxide, which is involved in bacterial respiration. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of hydrogen peroxide, leading to cell death.
CEDA can be used as an organic ligand in non-ionic surfactants for chemical synthesis and for analytical purposes, such as gravimetric analysis. NMR spectroscopy can be used to identify the presence of CEDA in samples.
