1-(Carboxymethyl)pyridinium chloride is a fluorine-containing organic compound that functions as an environmental corrosion inhibitor. It is similar to trimethylammonium chloride in that it reacts with metal surfaces to form a protective film of insoluble salts and hydroxy groups. 1-(Carboxymethyl)pyridinium chloride has been shown to be effective for the removal of organic acids from water, such as acetate, which are produced by microbial fermentation. This compound also inhibits the growth of bacteria by reacting with sulfamic acid and acidic compounds in the environment, which prevents their conversion into hydroxyl groups. Optical imaging studies have shown that 1-(carboxymethyl)pyridinium chloride reacts with hydroxyl groups on copper surfaces, producing a layer of corrosion inhibitor at the metal-solution interface.
