Hexyl sulfide is an extractant that is used in the separation of sulfur from particle. Hexyl sulfide reacts with hydrogen sulfide to form hydroxysulfuric acid, which can be detected by its acidic properties. The reaction mechanism for this substance is a combination of two reversible reactions, namely the formation of sulfuric acid and the reaction between hydrogen sulfide and hydroxyl groups to form hydrogen sulphide. The analytical method used for hexyl sulfides are pH and conductivity measurements, which are calibrated with a model system. Hexyl sulfide has been shown to react with palladium to form an alloy that has catalytic properties. Hexyl sulfide also reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce hydrogen gas and hydrochloric acid.
