N-(4-Phenoxyphenyl)acetamide is a nitroimidazole that is used as an antiviral agent. It inhibits the replication of herpes simplex virus by binding to the viral DNA polymerase, thereby inhibiting synthesis of viral DNA. N-(4-Phenoxyphenyl)acetamide has been shown to be a more efficient inhibitor of herpes simplex virus than acyclovir, and this compound also has a therapeutic advantage in that it does not interfere with normal cell growth. The antiviral activity of this drug may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA polymerase activity by forming covalent bonds with the amine groups on the enzyme surface. This drug also has been shown to inhibit DNA replication of other viruses such as adenovirus and vaccinia virus in vitro.
