3-Methyl-3-phenylbutanal is a ketone that deactivates halides by chemoselectively attacking the carbon atom in a CX bond. The reaction with CCl4 is an example. Halide elimination is followed by a stepwise, reversible oxidation of the hydrocarbon chain and formylation of the resulting radical. 3-Methyl-3-phenylbutanal has been shown to be active against carboxylic acids and their esters, as well as pharmacophores such as free radicals, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and nitric oxide (NO). The compound also has antioxidant properties due to its ability to scavenge ROS and NO.
