Phenethyl carbamate (PEC) is a sesquiterpene lactone that is found in plants. It has been shown to have a variety of pharmacological activities, including anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and radical scavenging properties. PEC has also been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin and tumour necrosis factor-α. Phenethyl carbamate may be effective in treating HIV infection by reducing the viral load in infected cells.
