Phenylbutazone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for the relief of pain and inflammation. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and alcohol, but not in ether. The drug was first introduced to the market by Smith Kline & French Laboratories (now GlaxoSmithKline) under the trade name Butazolidin. Phenylbutazone has been used as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic agent since 1951. It has been shown to have significant analgesic effects when taken orally or injected into joints or soft tissues. Phenylbutazone also has a stabilizing effect on certain crystals structures such as 4-methylpiperazinyl)(phenylamino)methane-1-thione.
