9H-Fluoren-3-amine is a nitrosoarene that has been shown to have cytotoxic and mutagenic properties. This compound is an oxidation product of n-hydroxy-4-aminobiphenyl, which is a nitrosamine precursor. 9H-Fluoren-3-amine has the ability to react with cellular components in the cytosol, such as nucleophilic groups, hypophosphorous acid, and nitrous acid. The cytotoxic effects are due to the formation of hydroxamic and hydroxamic acids from 9H-fluoren 3-amine. These compounds inhibit ribonucleotide reductase and DNA synthesis by interrupting the DNA chain reaction. 9H-Fluoren-3-amine has also been shown to be mutagenic in organic solution techniques, such as Ames test and micronucleus test.
