5,6-Methylenedioxy-1-indanone is a drug with both antidepressant and antipsychotic properties. It is an effective inhibitor of the enzyme serotonin N-acetyltransferase, which converts serotonin to melatonin. This drug has been used as a model system for studying the mechanisms of depression and schizophrenia. 5,6-Methylenedioxy-1-indanone has also been shown to be an efficient method to synthesize lycoricidine, mt2 receptors, and pancratistatin. The 3-bromopropylamine hydrobromide can be used as a starting material for this synthesis. Melatonin has been found to inhibit the effects of 5,6-methylenedioxy-1-indanone in animal studies. Phenanthridone is also known to bind to this receptor site and may have similar effects on the activities of this drug.
