Pyropheophorbide a methyl ester is an organic compound that is used in photodynamic therapy. It binds to hemoglobin, which is the oxygen-carrying protein of red blood cells. The binding of pyropheophorbide a methyl ester to hemoglobin causes it to become unstable and break down into reactive molecules that are cytotoxic. The carbonyl group on this molecule also makes it a good substrate for ABCG2, which is a transporter protein found on the surface of cancer cells. This drug has shown success in treating prostate cancer cells and herpes simplex virus. Pyropheophorbide a methyl ester has been shown to produce tumour necrosis when irradiated with UVB light, by inducing apoptosis and inducing the production of reactive oxygen species.
