It is soluble in organic solvents such as pyridine, toluene, and chlorinated solvents such as dichloromethane. This compound is used in the synthesis of polyphosphoric acid, which has applications in the production of fertilizers and plastics. 2-(3-Methylphenyl)benzimidazole also reacts with carbonyl groups to form amides. The compound can be used as an intermediate for diamines, which are used in the production of polyurethane products. 2-(3-Methylphenyl)benzimidazole is also reactive towards electron-rich groups such as nitro groups or amide groups at high temperatures.
