This compound is used in the synthesis of polyphosphoric acid, which has applications in the production of fertilizers and plastics. 2-(3-Methylphenyl)benzimidazole also reacts with carbonyl groups to form amides. The compound can be used as an intermediate for diamines, which are used in the production of polyurethane products. 2-(3-Methylphenyl)benzimidazole is also reactive towards electron-rich groups such as nitro groups or amide groups at high temperatures.
