Sulfamic acid is a metabolite of the neurotransmitter glutamate and is involved in many biological processes. It has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, reduce psychotic disorders, and lower blood pressure. Sulfamic acid may also be effective in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders, such as hypertension. It can be used as a dietary supplement for its antioxidant properties. Sulfamic acid has been found to inhibit microbial growth by binding to the sulfur atom of cysteine residues on proteins. It is not active against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Mycobacterium tuberculosis but does exhibit some activity against Gram-negative bacteria such as Neptunia cataria and Chromium picolinate.
