Description

Sodium arachidonate is a prostaglandin that is synthesized from arachidonic acid in the presence of sodium citrate. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are involved in inflammation and pain. Sodium arachidonate also inhibits platelet aggregation and leucocyte infiltration into solid tumours. This compound has been shown to inhibit carcinoma cell lines as well as to reduce levels of PGE2 in tumour cells. The anti-inflammatory effects of sodium arachidonate may be due to inhibition of phospholipase A2 activity, leading to a decrease in the production of arachidonic acid, which is metabolized by cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes to form prostaglandins.
