Ethyl 2-oxo-3-phenylpropanoate is a phenylpyruvic acid that is used as a chemical intermediate. It has been shown to be an enhancer for the uptake of cationic surfactants, amides and diazonium salts. Ethyl 2-oxo-3-phenylpropanoate also reacts with quinoline derivatives to produce symmetric or asymmetric synthesis. It can react with hydrogen chloride to produce an acid. This compound has been shown to have antidiabetic effects in humans.
