1,2-Dibromo-4-tert-butylbenzene is a reactive oxidant that can be used in the synthesis of galactose. It is a high yield oxidant that reacts with oxygen atoms to release chlorine. This product has been shown to induce cancer in mice and has been classified as a potential human carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program. 1,2-Dibromo-4-tert-butylbenzene also reacts with galactose to produce singlet oxygen and naoac (a fluorescent product). This reaction is efficient and produces yields of up to 98%.
