The tert-butyl group on the phenol molecule can be substituted with other groups to produce different compounds. 2-(tert-Butyl)-4-nitrophenol has been used as a probe to study the effect of nitrogen on fluorescence. This compound is paramagnetic and can be quenched by methanol solution. 2-(tert-Butyl)-4-nitrophenol is soluble in methanol, but insoluble in water.
