5-Norbornene-2,2-dimethanol is a cyclase inhibitor that inhibits the production of tyrosinase. It is used as a cosmetic ingredient and has been shown to inhibit melanin production in skin cells. 5-Norbornene-2,2-dimethanol binds to tyrosinase and prevents the enzyme from activating the next step in the process of melanogenesis. The substance also inhibits hydrogen chloride (HCl) induced melanogenesis by preventing the conversion of dopaquinone to dopachrome. This inhibition may be due to its ability to bind HCl or its ability to activate guanylate cyclase, which can inhibit tyrosinase activity.
