3-Hydroxy-2-benzylpropanoic acid is a carboxylic acid that is used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of other compounds. It can be obtained by the catalytic conversion of nitrobenzene to 3-hydroxy-2-nitropropanoic acid, followed by the hydrolysis of this intermediate with water and base. The hydroxyl group on 3-hydroxy-2-benzylpropanoic acid has been shown to be involved in its potent inhibition of enzymes such as phenylpropionic acid oxidase and enzymes that are responsible for preservatives. This compound also has acidic properties, with a pH of 2.3.
