2-Methyl-6-nitro-2H-indazole is a spontaneous isomeric mixture that is obtained from the reaction of 2,6-dichloroimidazole with nitromethane. It has been shown to react with DNA and cause mutations in Salmonella typhimurium. The mutagenicity of 2-methyl-6-nitro-2H-indazole in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 can be inhibited by the addition of various compounds such as phenylhydrazine or sodium azide. The mutagenic activity in this organism may be caused by an unidentified impurity, which can be removed by recrystallization. The yield of 2-methyl-6-nitro-2H indazole can vary greatly depending on the conditions used for its synthesis.
