3-Phenyl-1H-indole-2-carbaldehyde is an organic compound that belongs to the class of pyrolysis products. It can be synthesized by heating carbazole with aqueous sodium hydroxide, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting 3-phenyl-1H-indole. This reaction produces a mixture of 3-(2'-hydroxyethyl)indole and 3-(3'-hydroxypropyl)indole as well as 3-(4'-hydroxypentyl)indole. Intramolytic cleavage is the preferred mode of decomposition for this product.
