2-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-methylbutanoic acid is an inducer of microbial growth that can be used in the synthesis of organic acids. It has been shown to be efficient in the synthesis of 2-methyl-3-oxobutyric acid, which is a byproduct of L-malate degradation. The enantiomeric form of 2-(hydroxymethyl)-2-methylbutanoic acid is more effective at inducing the production of organic acids than its enantiomer.
