Description:

3-Undecanol is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have bacteriostatic properties. It is not active against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. 3-Undecanol inhibits the growth of microorganisms by preventing the synthesis of fatty acids, which are an important component in cell membrane composition. 3-Undecanol has been shown to inhibit the growth of brachyuran crabs, which may be due to its ability to prevent the synthesis of fatty acids. This chemical also has acetyl derivatives that can be extracted and analyzed using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, and it can be used as a chemical marker for microbial strains or conspecifics.
