4-(2-Methylphenyl)-4-oxobutanoic acid (4-MPBA) is an acceptor that is a methyl group donor. It has been shown to be active in the reduction of electron acceptors, such as sulfate and toluene. 4-MPBA also inhibits the synthesis of rRNA gene transcripts in anaerobic bacteria, which are responsible for the production of aromatic hydrocarbons. This drug is also capable of inhibiting specific enzymes in cultures of sulfide-producing bacteria, such as Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Desulfotomaculum reducens.
