It is used as an intermediate for the synthesis of esters, butyric acid and other organic compounds. 4-(2-Methylphenyl)butanoic acid can be oxidized by air to form violet crystals of 4-hydroxymethylbenzoic acid (4-HMB). The compound can also be used as a reagent for the determination of titration.
