Ethyl (E)-2-cyano-3-(thien-2-yl)acrylate is a crystalline compound that belongs to the thiophene class of compounds. The crystal structure of ethyl (E)-2-cyano-3-(thien-2-yl)acrylate is monoclinic and has conformers in different planes. This compound can exist as two polymorphs, one planar and one nonplanar. The conformations of this compound are due to the presence of hydrogen bonding between its molecules. Dimers also form when ethyl (E)-2-cyano-3-(thien-2-yl)acrylate comes into contact with other molecules. The disorder in this compound is due to the presence of rotational energy barrier, which causes it to rotate around its axis before adopting a new conformation.
