Product Information
Prodigiosin is a fluorescent pigment that is found in some bacteria and can be synthesized from cucurbitacin. It has been used as a pigment in paints, especially in the past when other pigments were scarce. Prodigiosin was first isolated from Serratia marcescens and its color varies depending on pH, with a yellow-green color at low pH and a red color at high pH. Prodigiosin is activated by heating and evaporation, which causes it to change from green to orange to red. Prodigiosin is also used as an indicator of bacterial growth because it accumulates during the logarithmic phase of growth. Prodigiosin has shown some promising effects against cancer cells, although more research needs to be done before any conclusions can be made.
