5-Phenyl-1H-pyrrole-3-carbaldehyde is a macrocyclic porphyrin with two imidazole substituents at the 5 and 1 positions. It belongs to the class of diatropic porphyrins, which are characterized by having two adjacent carbon atoms in the ring that are linked by a double bond. The other members of this class include protoporphyrin IX, chlorophylls A and B, hemes A and B, and corrins. The biological significance of this molecule is that it can coordinate to metal ions such as chloride or magnesium in biomolecules such as hemoglobin. This molecule also has a macrocycle consisting of an aromatic ring with six carbons (benzo) and two nitrogens (nitro).
