Product Information
- Tropamide
Phenylephrine hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic drug which acts as an alpha-adrenergic agonist and has the ability to dilate the pupil. This drug is used in ophthalmic preparations to relieve eye pain, irritation, congestion, and dilation of the pupil. Phenylephrine hydrochloride may also be used as a mydriatic or cycloplegic agent. It is used in combination with other drugs such as tropicamide or cyclopentolate to reduce eye pressure caused by glaucoma or following surgery. It may also be used in conjunction with benzalkonium chloride to prevent bacterial contamination of ophthalmic solutions. Phenylephrine hydrochloride is not active when taken orally because it is broken down by esterases and monoamine oxidase enzymes in the stomach and intestinal tract before it reaches the bloodstream.
