4-Methyl-3-propylpyridine is a nalorphine derivative that has analgesic and narcotic effects. It is used to treat moderate to severe pain, and can be administered orally or subcutaneously. The optical isomers of this compound are pharmacologically active, but the yields are low. The pharmacologic activity of 4-methyl-3-propylpyridine is antagonistic with other narcotic compounds like nalorphine and morphine.
The severity of the side effects of 4-methyl-3-propylpyridine is exacerbated by any drug that causes CNS depression such as alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, or narcotics.
