Product Information
Novobiocin is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of coumarin derivatives. It has shown apoptosis-inducing activity in a number of cell culture systems, including human erythrocytes and a number of model systems. Novobiocin also inhibits HSP90, a molecular chaperone protein that is involved in maintaining the structural integrity of proteins. Novobiocin has been shown to inhibit gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. This drug also inhibits dextran sulfate, an enzyme found in bacteria that synthesizes DNA. Novobiocin can be used for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by cells with high levels of HSP90 or gyrase or topoisomerase IV activity. The use of this drug may lead to drug interactions due to its effects on other cellular enzymes such as cytochrome P450 enzymes.
