Description:

1-Ethyl 3-methyl 2-methoxymalonate is an organic solvent used in the synthesis of oxalates. It is a white solid with a molecular weight of 144.17 g/mol and a boiling point of 161°C. 1-Ethyl 3-methyl 2-methoxymalonate can be used in the reaction liquid for methylation, which is the process of adding a methyl group to an organic compound. The reaction vessel for this process should be made from glass, as it will not react with methoxy groups or damage the container. 1-Ethyl 3-methyl 2-methoxymalonate should be added dropwise to avoid damaging the reaction vessel and may help to decarbonylate methanol by reacting with it to form formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. This product can then be centrifuged to separate out any liquid that has not reacted, before being dried using diethyl ether.
