Pent-4-enyl(triphenyl)phosphonium bromide is a phosphine used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It is selective for the hydrogenation of alkenes and alkynes to their corresponding alcohols or phenols. Pent-4-enyl(triphenyl)phosphonium bromide can catalyze the isomerization of cis-butene to trans butene, the elimination of methylchloroformate from diethylmalonate, and the stereoselective reduction of pivalaldehyde to vinyl alcohol. This compound has been shown to be active at temperatures ranging from -78 ˚C to 120 ˚C.
