Product Information
Alnusdiol is a diphenyl ether with antibacterial activity. It is acetylated to secoisolariciresinol, which has been shown to have antibacterial properties as well. Alnusdiol and secoisolariciresinol are both found in plants of the family Aceraceae, such as the Japanese Maple tree (Acer palmatum). These compounds are also found in other plant families such as the Rosaceae (e.g., apple) and the Rutaceae (e.g., citrus). They have been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by inhibiting lipid synthesis and thus preventing cell membrane synthesis; they also inhibit lipase enzymes that break down triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acids. Alnusdiol and secoisolariciresinol may also act on organisms such as bacteria by binding to their ribosomes or other cellular structures. The binding of these compounds inhibits protein synthesis and causes cell death by inhibiting the production
