Esmolol is a type of beta blocker that is used to control the heart rate and blood pressure in an emergency. It binds to the α1-acid glycoprotein receptor found on the surface of erythrocytes and reduces the affinity of these receptors for β2-adrenergic receptors in the heart. This prevents catecholamines from binding to β2-adrenergic receptors, thereby preventing stimulation of these receptors. Esmolol has been shown to decrease cardiac work by decreasing myocardial oxygen demand and increasing coronary flow. Esmolol may also be used as a sedative prior to intubation. It has been reported that esmolol hydrochloride can be administered intravenously or orally.
Esmolol may cause drug interactions with other drugs that affect blood pressure or heart rate, such as antihypertensives (e.g., nitrates), antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticoagulants, or calcium channel
