7-Amino-1,3-dimethyl-3,7-dihydro-1H-purine-2,6-dione is an antibiotic that belongs to the class of alkylating agents. It is a synthetic agent that acts by binding to the guanine base in DNA and forming a covalent bond. This prevents DNA replication and transcription. The physicochemical properties of this drug have been studied using x-ray diffraction methods. 7AAD binds with chloride ions to form a complex that is more soluble in water than its free form. This complex has been shown to be catalytically reduced by hydrogen peroxide or peroxide radicals to release the amine group from 7AAD, which then reacts with oxygen molecules to produce superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide. These reactive intermediates may lead to DNA damage and cell death through interactions with cellular macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids.
