Description:

3-Chloro-N-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-propanamide (3CMDPA) is an alkaline herbicide that is used to control the growth of broadleaf weeds in crops. It has a short half life and does not persist in soil. 3CMDPA inhibits plant growth by blocking cell division. 3CMDPA binds to the active site of the enzyme acetohydroxyacid synthase, which catalyzes the first step in the synthesis of three important plant hormones: auxin, gibberellins and cytokinins. This binding prevents the formation of these hormones, which leads to uncontrolled cell division and eventual death. 3CMDPA also binds to other enzymes, such as nitrilase and hydroxylase, which are necessary for amino acid synthesis.
