2-Amino-3-(4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylphenyl)propanoic acid hydrochloride is a potent antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. It is an amide derivative of the natural amino acid arginine. 2-Amino-3-(4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethylphenyl)propanoic acid hydrochloride has been shown to be an antagonist of the NMDA receptor in functional assays and in vitro assays with caco-2 cells. In vivo, this drug has been shown to have antinociceptive effects in animals.
