Ramoplanin A2 is a new microbicide that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against human pathogens. Ramoplanin A2 is a novel synthetic compound with a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The molecule was designed by using chemical methods to attach two fatty acids, myristic acid and lauric acid, to the antibiotic ramoplanin, a natural product. Ramoplanin A2 has been shown to be effective against drug-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). The molecule is biocompatible and can be synthesized in an asymmetric fashion using a simple chemical reaction.
