5-(Chloromethyl)thiazole hydrochloride (5-CT) is a dopamine transporter inhibitor that is used in research of the dopamine system. This drug binds to the dopamine transporter, thereby blocking dopamine reuptake and prolonging the action of dopamine in synapses. 5-CT has been shown to increase motivation and impair cognitive function, which may be due to its ability to increase dopaminergic neurotransmission.
5-CT is also used as a probe for the study of other neurotransmitter systems such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine.
