1,2,4-Oxadiazole-3-carboxylic acid (1,2,4-Oxa) is an amidrazone that has been isolated from a number of natural sources such as plants and animals. 1,2,4-Oxa is synthesized by the reaction of ammonium hydroxide with chlorides in the presence of catalysts such as piperidino or thiourea. This compound has been shown to be effective in the treatment of schistosomiasis. It also inhibits bacterial growth through its ability to inhibit ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis.
