Product Information
- 2-(2-Furyl)benzoic acid
- Benzoic acid, 2-(2-furanyl)-
2-(Fur-2-yl)benzoic acid is an inhibitor of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. This enzyme is required for the production of NADPH, which is used in the pentose phosphate pathway and glycolysis. 2-(Fur-2-yl)benzoic acid has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of this enzyme with a selectivity index of 7.8 (compared to 2.4 for 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid). It also inhibits other enzymes in the pentose phosphate pathway such as transketolase and phosphogluconate dehydrogenase. The mechanism by which 2-(fur-2-yl)benzoic acid works is not well understood but it may be due to its high affinity for riboflavin sites on the enzyme or its ability to form covalent bonds with residues in the active site of glucose-6-phosphate
