Product Information
3-(Hydroxymethyl)-5-methylphenol is an aromatic compound that is oxidized to the corresponding quinone. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other bacteria by inhibiting their dehydrogenase enzymes. 3-(Hydroxymethyl)-5-methylphenol is a substrate for alcohol dehydrogenase, which catalyzes its conversion to the corresponding hydroxyquinone. This compound can be stabilized with dithiothreitol, which prevents oxidation of the alcohol group. The enzyme alcohol dehydrogenases are responsible for the conversion of 3-(hydroxymethyl)-5-methylphenol into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, an intermediate in biochemical pathways.
