Quinidine is a drug that has been used to treat arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, and congestive heart failure. It works by slowing the rate of the heartbeat, reducing blood pressure, and increasing the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream. Quinidine is also used to diagnose some types of heart disease and other conditions by measuring cardiac enzyme activities. The most common side effects are hypotension, tachycardia, dizziness, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Quinidine is not effective for bacterial infections because it does not cross the blood-brain barrier or enter cells.
