1-Benzyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indol-2-one is a modulator of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. It has been shown to have psychoactive properties, and is used as an experimental tool in the study of psychiatric disorders. 1-Benzyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indol-2-one binds to the m1 receptor and blocks the binding of acetylcholine by acetylcholine receptor. This inhibition leads to a decrease in acetylcholine levels, which may be responsible for its therapeutic effects. 1BIDI has also been shown to have allosteric properties that are thought to be responsible for its function as a modulator. Allosteric modulation occurs when compounds bind to sites other than those on the protein that bind agonists. Allosteric modulation can either increase or decrease the activity of a protein by binding at an allosteric site
