2,2-Diphenyl-cyclopropanecarboxylic acid is a chiral compound with a crystalline form. It can be prepared by the reaction of cyclopropane and phenylacetaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst. The 2,2-diphenylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid is obtained as a byproduct of the reaction and can be isolated on the basis of its boiling point. This compound has been used to suppress lactones and carboxylic acids in organic synthesis. The esterification of this compound with aminoethanol yields 2,2-doxycyclohexane-1,1-dicarboxylic acid. This chemical can also be used for derivatizing other compounds using various reagents such as chlorosulfonic acid or pyridine hydrochloride.
