Vasicine is a naturally occurring compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity. It is an alkaloid, and its structure resembles that of peganine. Vasicine hydrochloride is a racemic mixture of vasicine, which can be synthesized from malonic acid and trifluoroacetic acid. The toxicity of vasicine has not been studied extensively in humans, but animal studies have shown it to be nontoxic at high doses. Vasicine was shown to have anti-inflammatory activity in rats with carrageenan-induced paw edema. Vasicine also inhibits the growth of gram-positive bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens, but not Mycobacterium tuberculosis or Mycobacterium avium complex. This may be due to its interference with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall components such as peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharides.
