(2-Hydroxyethyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide is a cation channel blocker. It binds to the C-terminal region of the human ether-a-go-go related gene (hERG) potassium channel, preventing it from opening. This prevents the influx of sodium ions into the cell and leads to decreased cellular excitability. The hERG protein is found in cardiac muscle cells and mutations in this protein can lead to long QT syndrome, a heart rhythm disorder that can result in sudden death. (2-Hydroxyethyl)triphenylphosphonium bromide blocks the ion channels associated with long QT syndrome, thus preventing arrhythmia.
