5-Methylumbelliferone is a plant pigment that is found in many plants, including the flowers of the common groundsel. It has been shown to inhibit chitinase and β-glucosidase enzyme activity, as well as promoting fluorescence in plants. 5-Methylumbelliferone can be synthesized by reacting malonate with carbonyl chloride. The synthesis of this compound was first reported in 1943. This compound has been used as a fluorometric substrate for β-glucosidase and malic acid.
