Diisopropyl fumarate is a copolymer of methyl ethyl and diisopropyl. It has been shown to have cross-linking properties that make it useful in the production of polymers. Diisopropyl fumarate is also a precursor to dimethyl fumarate, which is used in the treatment of psoriasis by inhibiting the activation of nuclear factor kappa beta (NF-κB). This drug has been shown to have an optical purity of 98 percent or greater. Diisopropyl fumarate is produced from cinnamic acid derivatives by hydrogenation with nickel catalyst at high pressure and temperature. The product can be analyzed gravimetrically or through gas chromatography with nitrogen detection. Diisopropyl fumarate has a molecular weight of 172 g/mol and chemical formula CH3COCO(CH2)4COOC4H9F3O2.
